Face to Face

Self-portraits by Chris Ellis

Face to Face is an exhibition of new work, exploring what Ellis considers to be the most challenging genre in which to paint. To get a physical likeness is challenging. To show the character or personality of the subject is more challenging.

“It has been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. If you get the eyes right, the rest of the painting will fall into place.”

Ellis has chosen to paint these self-portraits because of the availability of the model, always willing and able. Portrait painting can assist with honing your observation skills. In every culture through the ages, portraiture in some form has been practised.
